CONFERENCE DETAILS

On behalf of the Santa Margarita Catholic High School Model United Nations Secretariat and Staff, it is our pleasure to welcome you to our annual conference, SOCOMUN. On Saturday, September 28, 2024, we hope to provide an educational and enjoyable environment for beginning to skilled delegates to engage in debate upon pressing international issues. We hope this page will help you better prepare for SOCOMUN.

  • 8:30 AM Please arrive promptly

  • 9:00 AM Opening ceremonies

  • 11:15 AM - 12:00 AM 1st Lunch (Freshman Committees) All lunches are provided TK Burger

  • 12:15 AM - 1:00 PM 2nd Lunch (NOT Freshman and Advanced Committee) All lunches are provided TK Burger

  • 3:15 PM Committee ends

  • 3:30 pm Closing Ceremonies

  • 4:00 PM Conference Ends (Time is approximate)

 

COMMITTEE INFORMATION

See your committee's topic synopsis for specific information regarding each individual committee. 

POSITION PAPERS: No prewritten resolutions or position papers are required! 

TECHNOLOGY: All delegates are also encouraged to bring their own laptops/tablets to work on resolutions. Cell phones are not allowed for typing resolutions or to be used during committees. 

INTERNET ACCESS: A wireless network, called SOCOMUN, will be available for all delegates to use. No password is required to access this network, and WIFI access is available across campus. 

DEBATE: At SOCOMUN, there is no "general" or "substantive" debate. Debate is open, and delegates are free to discuss the background of their topic, their country's policies, and solutions in their speeches. 

SCORING RUBRIC: You can access our rubric here.

AWARDS: Each committee will give out multiple commendation and outstanding awards. Freshmen and NOT Freshman will also give out one best delegate award, and Advanced committees will give out one gavel award. 

PLASTIC: In order to eliminate plastic waste we will not have plastic water bottles available at our conference. We have water bottle filling stations around campus. Students should bring their own water bottle to the conference.

DIETARY RESTRICTIONS: If you have any dietary restrictions please inform your advisor who will alert our leadership team.

SNACK BAR: Students should bring money for our snack bar. We don’t accept Apple Pay or Venmo.

MOBILITY: Please make your advisor aware of any mobility issues you might have so they can let our leadership team know. If you need access to the elevator to reach the second or third floors we can issue you an elevator key. If you have other needs we will do everything we can to accommodate you.
